Chinese New Year 恭喜发财

恭喜发财! Gung hei faat coi! Happy Chinese New Year everyone! Technically it was yesterday but I got distracted and wrote about other stuff. :P

More beautiful photos of the celebration can be seen here. :)

Are you curious what this Year of the Dragon has in store for you? I am year of the “Pig” (oink!) apparently. Which always bugged me as a kid as it seemed a pretty lame animal to me, however as an adult I’ve grown to like piggies.

You can read each sign’s predictions here: http://www.almasryalyoum.com/en/node/614791

My prediction says:

“Chung believes this year will be a little fast-paced for the Pig but advises him to take initiative to stay in the game. “The Dragon will shake things up for the Pig in his relationships,” says Chung, “but this may not be a bad thing.” The Pig has seen good health and good wealth in the past two years, but Chung says this trend can continue if the Pig stays smart and takes some risks.”

Hmm!

Pink Valentine?

Gloomth needs your help! We have just enough of this adorable pink and black taffeta to make one limited edition design in time for Valentine’s Day- but we can’t decide what to make! We don’t often work with such cheerful colors. ;)

Would it be cutest as a super ruffly skirt? Maybe a little cropped jacket with lace trims? Or part of a very fluffy dress?

What do you think? Comment and let us know!

Salon Noir’s Surreal Speakeasy

We here at the ‘Cult are huge fans of the Salon Noir events in Toronto (and not just because one of our models and dear friends created them). It’s so great to have unique creative dark events in the city again. We love the play on eras and themes, and encourage anyone local to come out and see for themselves what the fuss is about.

The next Salon Noir has a decadent 1920s feel complete with burlesque performances and more! I will definitely be there, so come out and say hello and enjoy the magic.

Tickets are on sale now online and in stores!

In Protest

Today our blog is lent towards the SOPA/PIPA protest. See that nifty black banner hovering over everything? :)

I am sure most of you already know about this, but for those of you not up on these things- you should be. I am not going to write an enormous rant here about how this legislation is horrifying because you already know it is. We are not an American company but this potential legislation will seriously effect sites and online communities across the planet, safe havens for free speech and creativity.

There are lots of things you can do about this, from petitions to writing to your congress (if you are in the USA).

If you want a concise explanation of why this legislation is freaking so many people out today I highly recommend this video:

Darkly Dreaming Photoseries

Recently I’ve been changing our computer side of things around and have had a chance to rummage through 5+ years of photoshoots and product photos. It’s been really interesting looking back at what we did at the beginning and what we do now.

Darkly Dreaming

One series I found was this one, “Darkly Dreaming”, which is a collection of strange ethereal photos starring several of our models in eerie Victorian settings.

Darkly Dreaming

You can check out the whole series in our flickr album!

What do you think of these dreamy photos? Would you like to see more vintage Gloomth photoseries?

Our Comely Belle

Inspired by school uniforms and Victorian swim costumes our “Comely Belle” dress is deceptively simple. The perfect go to dress for a casual day look that still makes you look like a doll. With it’s contrasting bow and details it’s eye catching and really easy to accessorize to suit your mood or event!

Pair it with maryjane dolly shoes and otk socks for a cute style or with giant buckle-y goth boots and spikey jewelry for a more playful fierce look.

We also offer this dress in black with white accents, or can have it made in just about any color combination you can imagine.

Dreaming of Spring

I apologize for not posting much this week, we are in the process of rebuilding the computer/technical side of things here. However, it is now Friday and it snowed overnight. There is white fluff pooled in my windowsills and a pervasive chill creeping into my home office. I like winter for about 2 weeks and then it becomes this oppressive ugly season of salt stains on my shoes and lost mittens.

Kuroihitomi enjoys a picnic in the sun.

Aside from the excitement of wearing my ridiculous looking brand new snowboots (black Moonboots if you’re curious) the snow is somewhat disheartening as it means winter has arrived properly in our part of the world. Time to bundle up and wear giant boots for a couple of months every time I want to leave the house, petticoats flattened under coats, and hats leaving impressions on my hair in the worst ways.

LadyRakasha is impossibly pretty in the woods.

So in an effort to chase off the winter blues and the faint beginnings of “seasonal affective disorder” I am going to post some spring inspired Gloomth photos on this cold winter’s day and think about the season of new growth and flowers that really isn’t that far off.
